According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the government has allowed the former prime minister to be shifted to the hospital for operation and treatment of ‘bilateral inguinal hernia and cholecystitis’.
Abbasi was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for a medical check-up on Saturday after his health deteriorated.
The former PM is in custody in connection with the LNG scandal, which is under investigation by the National Accountability Bureau.
Last week, Abbasi’s family had said that he was being kept under inhumane conditions in solitary confinement and his incarceration was in violation of basic human rights.
The court had also been told that the former PM would require two immediate surgeries considering his health.
During his hearing, Abbasi had also requested the court that his trial should be broadcast live, adding in a sarcastic manner, “I want entire Pakistan to see how corrupt their representatives are.”
