Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Director General (DG) Bashir Ahmed Memon submitted his resignation on the day when the government decided to remove him from his post. He will be replaced by Inspector General Railways, Wajid Zia, who rose to fame in the Panama Paper Scandal.

According to a report by Umar Cheema in The News, Memon’s history has been an interesting one. He was removed as DG Hyderabad after he clashed with President Zardari. Memon had choose to pursue a case involving the former president’s step brother Muzaffar Tapi even when the president had asked him to not. Interestingly, the relationship between Zardari and Memon goes back to their Cadet College Petaro days where Zardari was Memon’s senior.

Similarly, the FIA DG also clashed with former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in a case where Memon was pursuing an MQM MNA in a money laundering case. Abbasi had asked him to back down but Memon refused to do so. Eventually Abbasi let him to do his job.

Given his history of working righteously, Memon clashed with the PTI government a lot. The PTI government wanted to open cases against many PML-N and PPP leaders but Memon refused to do so in the absence of any evidence. He refused to move on in the Shahbaz Sharif case and similarly resisted the government’s unlawful pursual of Maryam Nawaz, Pervez Rashid and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

All of this time he was operating under immense pressure from the government as he refused to pursue a case without evidence.

In light of his resignation, adviser to the prime minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan was contacted to get her view on the subject. According to her the DG FIA had resigned on his own accord. Anonymous sources beg to differ and confirm that they government was pressuring Memon to resign.

In the end, Memon feels that he has been wronged by the government and believes that the workings of the government should be transparent so that people know how things are operating.
