A transgender person was shot dead, while two others were injured in a firing incident in Karak on Wednesday.

According to The News, three transgenders identified as Jehangir, Mushtaq and Arshad were travelling back to Kohat after attending a musical concert in Jatta Ismailkhel area in Karak when unidentified gunmen fired at their vehicle.

They were rushed to the hospital. The three were initially taken to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Banda Daud Shah and later referred to the Divisional Hospital Kohat.

Jehangir Succumbed To Wounds Because There Was No Staff at Kohat Hospital To Treat Him

According to Samaa TV, people close to the victims claimed that there was no doctor or medical staff available on duty at Divisional Hospital Kohat.

This lead to the death of Jehangir, who could have survived if she was treated on time, according to the companions of the victims.

They also claimed that a trainee medical officer was sent after they protested against negligence.

If the accusations are true, it means that PTI government’s tall claims

of improving the health sector in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

are anything but actions.

Violence Against Transgenders In Pakistan

A them.us story claims that 62 transgenders have been shot dead or killed in Pakistan since 2015, while the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is worse as 479 cases of violence against transgenders were reported.

The noteworthy thing is that this report was published in August 2018, and since then, a number of transgenders have been shot dead mainly in KP.

Why Is The Government Silent?

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government seems to have turned a blind eye to violence against transgenders.

Reps of the ruling party will appear after each unfortunate incident, make some statements and promises and nothing would happen.

The vicious cycle of violence against trans people needs to end, and government needs to act now. Pakistan cannot afford to lose more precious lives.
